Ageing occurs when the epidermis (outer layer of skin) gets thinner, and the number of melanocytes (pigment-containing cells) decreases. There is also a natural loss of elastic tissue (elastin and collagen) which makes it harder for your skin to stretch and go back to normal, causing wrinkles and sagging skin.

One of the biggest contributors to ageing, besides biological factors, is sun exposure. The ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun causes damage to the dermis (middle layer of skin) and can result in a loss of elasticity.

Smoking is also another cause of premature ageing as it increases the production of enzymes that break down collagen, which results in your skin losing its elasticity.
